Great intro book on GNU/Linux

Great intro book on GNU/Linux
There's not much difference between the first edition and this second edition, though the first is 344 pages and this new is 342 pages. There are rearrangements with some chapters here and there. So if you have the 1st edition, not much difference with the new.One thing I did not understand is what changes has been between the first and the second edition. The authors are not the same: 1st ed.: Roderick W. Smith & 2nd ed.: Christine Bresnahan and Richard Blum.Lastly, if you want to learn about Linux and how to use it, whether it is for personal use or because of the certification, it's a great start.

If you've never used Linux and don't know where to start id recommend this book for sure! Its enough to dip your toes in and keep you interested but not overly in depth. The book wont necessarily provide any high level explanations for most things, but its enough to get someone curios to look into a specific subject related to Linux more. I had to buy this for class and I thoroughly enjoyed its price, and its content!

I am NOT a Linux guru by any stretch but use it on several laptops and via several distributions. I also have a bunch of distros in Virtualbox on my laptop so I use either the Kindle for PC (or Kindle cloud reader if I am within one of these Linux distros) and simply follow the commands in each chapter to practice. The book itself is really just an OVERVIEW and a brief prep for the Essentials exam which I have not taken yet. I think with any of these Linux exams you really need hands on even if just to run basic commands to see the output and practice especially for things related to scripting and the command syntax. That said, I would hope this "Essentials" exam isn't going to expect someone to memorize all of the commands/options mentioned in the chapters because that's impossible. Even Linux experts have to go to the MAN pages for seldom used commands. For what the book is for, it's a good purchase but hands-on and probably some LPIC-1/LPIC-2 books would be helpful to really dive in and learn more details. I have no idea if you could pass this first intro exam with just this book or not....I'll probably have to waste $$$$ on a first try (unless I pass) since there just doesn't seem to be any real practice exams to even get a feel for what material is covered and how deeply.

This book was published in 2015 which is a millennium in the cyber world. It is laid out in a haphazard fashion and doesn’t fully explain commands and options for anything. The paper it’s printed on is cheap and it makes the few graphics used difficult to read. Bottom line, there are other better books if you are trying to learn Linux.

I highly recommend this book for all people interesting in Linux. My previous experience was like a typical user of Ubuntu where I had to manage with the setbacks of new Operation System because I was a Windows user. I have been using Linux (Ubuntu) since 4 years ago and I want to highlight that thank this book I have acquired a whole idea of Linux OS, filling a lot of gaps that I had.
