12)
The average of two numbers is equal to double the positive difference between them. If the smaller number is 9, what is the larger number?
Explanation
Work this out using algebra with the larger number = x and lower number = y:
2(x-y) = (x+y)/2, 4(x – y) = x + y
Sub in y = 9,
4(x – 9) =x + 9, 4x – 36 = x + 9, 3x = 45, x = 15
