35) Although the plastic version of the Hula Hoop we all know was introduced in the 1950’s, Hula Hooping has been around since ancient times. For more than 3,000 years, humans have been using a variety of materials to “hoop”, including dried grapevines and stiff grass braided or weaved into hoop shapes.  Despite this long history, the word hula has only been associated with the hoop for about 200 years.  British sailors noted that the motions involved in hooping were very similar to those performed when Hula dancing.  The first commercial Hula Hoops were made out of wood by a company in Australia and were the inspiration for the plastic hoops we use today.
