1) The American Psychological Association has developed ethical principles urging investigators to

1. avoid the use of monetary incentives in recruiting people to participate in research.
2. forewarn potential research participants of the exact hypotheses that the research will test.
3. avoid the manipulation of independent variables in research involving human participants.
4. explain the research to the participants after the study has been completed.
5. increase the difficulty level of research endeavors while maintaining validity.

APA ethical guidelines require that researchers debrief participants at the conclusion of the study.  In this context, psychologists provide a prompt opportunity for participants to obtain appropriate information about the nature, results, and conclusions of the research, and they take reasonable steps to correct any misconceptions that participants may have of which the psychologists are aware.
